Bakyala Tukole

Economic independence through craftsmanship

Empowerment on the Ssese Islands

Sustainable support by helping people to help themselves

An empowerment project for economic independence and social empowerment through handmade products by women on the Ssese Islands

Since 2018, the Bakyala Tukole empowerment project has been supporting women on the Ssese Islands in Uganda to achieve financial independence through handmade products. In cooperation with Bbanga Project, we want to create sustainable sources of income and thus strengthen the community.

Empowering women, promoting community

The aim of Bakyala Tukole is to promote the economic independence of women on the Ssese Islands and thus improve the social fabric of the entire community. Through handicrafts, such as the production of bags, jewelry and sustainable hygiene articles, the women not only gain financial independence, but also more self-confidence and recognition.

Sustainability and independence

The project began with the production of reusable hygiene products to close a gap in the supply. In rural areas of Uganda, many women do not have access to safe and affordable hygiene products. The women of Bakyala Tukole filled this gap by handcrafting sustainable sanitary pads – an important step towards promoting the health and dignity of women and girls in their community.

Handicrafts as a source of income

Over time, the project has evolved and now offers a wide range of handicraft products. From handmade bags and backpacks to jewelry and crochet work – the variety of products has grown and gives the women the opportunity to develop new sources of income and support their families.

Empowerment through collaboration

Bakyala Tukole thrives on the power of community. The women support each other, learn from each other and grow together. Their work not only promotes economic stability, but also raises awareness of the rights and needs of women and girls in Uganda.

“When we work together, we can achieve anything. Our hands not only create products, but also the future.”
